Teeth Whitening

Many people look in the mirror and notice that their teeth were not quite as white as they once were. The darkening and staining of teeth are both a natural part of aging. Certain lifestyle factors such as tobacco, tea, coffee, wine, and soda can speed the process, causing a brown, yellow, or grayish hue to develop on the enamel.

What many people do not realize is that even healthy foods can leave color deposits on the teeth.

  • Berries
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Curry, turmeric, and other spices
  • Colorful peppers
  • Pomegranates
  • Beetroot
Rather than forgoing delicious and healthy foods, teeth whitening offers a solution.

Because enamel thins with age, white teeth are often associated with youth and health, which is why we offer two professional teeth whitening options in our Hong Kong Central dental office – both in-office and take-home teeth bleaching systems.

Many people find teeth whitening ideal to look their best at important events such as weddings, birthdays, reunions, vacations, holidays, and other milestones.

Before beginning any type of tooth whitening, your dentist will evaluate the oral health of each patient to ensure comfort and safety. A dental cleaning done prior to your whitening appointment will also remove tartar from the teeth that can interfere with the teeth whitening process.

In-Office (Chairside) Teeth Whitening

When patients want the fastest results and wish to jump-start their teeth whitening treatment, in-office teeth bleaching can provide an improvement of several shades in a single sitting. Our team will place a protective barrier over the gums and retract the lips. Next, a professional strength whitening gel will be placed on the teeth and activated with a special light that speeds the process.

In-office teeth whitening can be repeated up to four times in a single appointment based on the patient’s desired shade.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

Many patients who have in-office teeth whitening choose to complement their chairside teeth bleaching with a custom take-home kit. Take-home teeth whitening can also be performed on its own.

Here is how it works:

  • Impressions of teeth to make customized bleaching trays
  • Demonstration and instruction
  • Determining the proper teeth whitening gel
  • A before-and-after shade measurement to monitor results

Patients can retain their whitening trays for future touch-ups should teeth appear to darken.

What about Sensitive Teeth?

Patients who have sensitive teeth may still be able to have a whiter smile. Desensitizing agents and fluoride application can help.

Solutions for Stain-Resistant Teeth

Teeth that have suffered trauma or that have stubborn internals stains may benefit from porcelain veneers to cover the tooth completely for the most esthetic results.

Frequently Asked Questions

As with all dental treatments, we recommend everything based on each patient’s needs and goals for their smile. In most cases, teeth whitening is safe for healthy patients and often healthier for your enamel and gums than many store-bought options.

At Dr. William Cheung & Associates, we offer both in-office, chairside teeth whitening and take-home custom teeth whitening kits.

Here is how they work:

Chairside Teeth Whitening

If time is a concern for you and you want a white smile fast, chairside teeth bleaching takes about 60-90 minutes and provides great results for most stains such as yellow teeth.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

You can choose to continue whitening your teeth at home after your initial in-office bleaching appointment, or office whitening can work on its own.

We will create custom teeth whitening trays for you to use for about an hour each day.

What about Teeth Whitening Toothpaste, Strips, and Rinses?

For some people, store-bought whitening products can have a subtle impact on the smile. Unfortunately, they also come with a few challenges.

Worn enamel – Abrasive toothpaste can cause enamel wear and scratching.
Sensitive gums – With generic teeth whitening trays or strips, more of the bleaching agent leaks onto the gums. This can make gums and teeth feel sensitive, especially in cases of recession.

Would you like to learn more? The best time to whiten your teeth is right after a dental cleaning. We are happy to discuss your options for a whiter smile.
