Preventive Dentistry

At Dr. William Cheung & Associates, our dentists work with patients to educate them and partner with them to prevent oral health diseases whenever possible. A good preventive dental routine can reduce the number of complex treatments and dental emergencies patients experience over the course of their lifetimes by identifying and treating potential problems before they advance.

Routine Dental Cleanings and Exams (Check-Ups)

Periodic visits to your Central Hong Kong dentist aim to monitor oral health and detect common issues such as decay and gum disease while they are less complex and often easier to treat.

We base check-up and cleaning frequency on a patient-by-patient basis. Oral health can change over the course of a lifetime. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, aging, and menopause, can all lead to changes in the mouth, as can certain medications and illnesses, which is why we tailor our treatment carefully.

Comprehensive dental exams:

  • Tooth-by-tooth exams – a visual exam to identify decay, fractures, wear, and damaged crowns or fillings
  • Evaluation of gum tissue – a periodontal exam to check for bleeding and pocketing in the gums
  • Oral cancer screening – identifying any suspicious lesions
  • Digital imaging – photographs, intraoral pictures, and radiographs to identify decay and other conditions not visible to the eye alone
  • Consultation – discussion of patient goals and concerns as well as any treatment options available, including cosmetic dentistry patients may be interested in

The goal of dental check-ups is to prevent tooth loss and any pain associated with dental emergencies due to unknown or undiagnosed conditions.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Your hygienist will gently remove tartar that builds up on the teeth. A polish will remove small tartar particles and surface stains from the teeth. Dental hygienists and dentists work in tandem to help patients achieve and maintain optimal oral health.

Each dental cleaning is unique to the patient’s needs with the end goal of keeping teeth healthy, attractive, and comfortable.

Diagnostic Digital Imaging

Dental imaging, including intraoral pictures, digital photography, and dental x-rays (radiographs), reveal what is happening beneath the enamel of the teeth. These technologies support our dentists in accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The main goal of preventive dentistry is to stop little problems before they become big problems. For example, a small untreated cavity could eventually grow and impact the nerve deep within the tooth, resulting in the need for root canal therapy. Treating a small cavity, which can be detected by the dentist or via x-rays, is usually less costly and complex than root canal treatment.

Our gentle dentists also monitor gum and bone health. Periodontal disease is progressive and can sometimes be reversed in its earliest stages, which is called gingivitis. Once periodontal disease progresses into periodontitis, regular maintenance can help control the condition, but not reverse it.

At each dental exam, our dentists:

  • Examine each tooth
  • Perform a periodontal (gum) exam
  • Look for signs of oral cancer
  • Provide treatment options to solve any issue
  • Ask our patients about what works best for them

Other treatments like dental x-rays are recommended on a case-by-case basis.

Our goal at Dr. William Cheung & Associates is to help patients have better oral health by offering preventive dentistry to detect any dental diseases as quickly as possible. Our dentists will always present all treatment options available and help you make a choice that works well for your budget and goals.
