Anti-snoring Device

We Treat Snoring and Sleep Disruption

Loud snoring, restless sleep, and daytime fatigue can stem from obstructed airways during rest. We offer custom-fitted oral appliances to improve breathing and restore quality sleep.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Chronic snoring is often a sign of a restricted airway, which can lead to fragmented sleep and put stress on the cardiovascular system. While occasional snoring can happen to anyone, patients who experience regular, heavy snoring, or who wake up gasping for air, may be suffering from undiagnosed sleep-disordered breathing. Over time, this can contribute to:

  • Loud, disruptive snoring
  • Daytime drowsiness and fatigue
  • Morning headaches or dry mouth
  • Sore throat upon waking
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory lapses
  • Irritability and mood changes
  • Waking up with a choking or gasping sensation
  • High blood pressure
  • Partner sleep disturbance

The causes of snoring vary from person to person and can range from nasal congestion, sleep position, and relaxed throat muscles to anatomical factors such as a low soft palate, enlarged tonsils, or excess weight.

When left untreated, chronic snoring can escalate into obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This deprives the brain and body of oxygen, increasing the risk of long-term health issues such as hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.

Jaw Positioning and Airway Function

A narrow or recessed jaw can cause the tongue and soft tissues to collapse backward during sleep, partially blocking the airway. This vibration of obstructed airflow is what creates the sound of snoring. In more severe cases, the airway becomes fully blocked, leading to apneic episodes.

Restoring proper jaw alignment during sleep can open the airway, allowing for smoother, quieter breathing and more restorative rest.

In-Home Sleep Assessment

For patients who want clarity before starting treatment, we offer a convenient in-home sleep test. You wear a lightweight, medical-grade ring on your finger for a few nights at home, so no wires, no clinic stay required. It tracks your blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and breathing patterns to detect sleep disruptions. The data is then analyzed to determine whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. We review the results with you and use them to guide your treatment recommendations.

Treatment for Snoring with Oral Appliances

In many cases, patients who struggle with snoring or mild-to-moderate sleep apnea find significant relief from a custom-fitted mandibular advancement device (MAD), also known as an anti-snoring mouthguard.

These oral appliances serve several important purposes:

Airway opening – The device gently positions the lower jaw forward, which pulls the tongue and soft palate away from the back of the throat. This creates a clearer passage for airflow during sleep.

Reduce tissue vibration – By stabilizing the jaw and supporting the surrounding soft tissues, the appliance minimizes the tissue flutter that causes snoring sounds.

Promote deeper sleep – With improved breathing, patients experience fewer nighttime arousals. This allows for longer, more continuous sleep cycles, reducing daytime fatigue and improving overall well-being.

Custom comfort – Unlike over-the-counter boil-and-bite guards, our custom-fitted devices are made from precise digital scans of your teeth and bite. This ensures a snug, comfortable fit that stays in place throughout the night without causing jaw discomfort.

Treating Advanced Airway Conditions

On occasion, we refer patients to sleep specialists or ENT (ear, nose, and throat) physicians for further evaluation. For patients with more severe sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy or surgical options may be recommended alongside or instead of an oral appliance.

For patients with missing teeth or unstable dentition, restorative work such as implants or crowns may be suggested first to ensure the appliance has a secure foundation.
We work closely with each patient in our Central Hong Kong dental office to identify the underlying causes of snoring and sleep disruption. Our dentists will make a personalized recommendation based on each individual’s anatomy, symptoms, and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both treat snoring and sleep apnea, but they work in very different ways.
An anti-snoring device is a small, custom mouthguard that gently moves your jaw forward to keep your airway open while you sleep. It's silent, portable, and requires no electricity.

A breathing machine (CPAP) is an electronic device that sits beside your bed and pushes pressurized air through a mask to hold your airway open. It's generally used for more severe cases.

The right choice depends on your specific condition. For mild-to-moderate cases, an anti-snoring device is often highly effective and better tolerated. For severe cases, a breathing machine is usually the gold standard. We use an in-home sleep test to assess your breathing patterns and recommend the most suitable option for you.

No. Occasional snoring can happen due to sleep position, nasal congestion, or alcohol consumption. However, loud, frequent snoring—especially when paired with gasping, choking, or daytime fatigue—may indicate sleep apnea. A home sleep test can help determine the difference.

Yes. For the best results, the anti-snoring device should be worn every night, just like a nightguard for teeth grinding. Consistent use ensures your airway stays open and your sleep quality improves.

In most cases, yes. Patients with dental restorations can still use a custom appliance. However, the anti-snoring device must be designed carefully to avoid putting pressure on implants or crowns. We will evaluate your dental condition during your consultation to ensure the device is suitable.

Generic "boil-and-bite" devices are not custom-fitted and can cause jaw discomfort, tooth movement, or even worsen snoring if they shift your jaw into an incorrect position. A professionally made appliance is more comfortable, effective, and safer for long-term use.
